After more than 3 years running roughshod over local communities on the north west coast or Ireland, oil & gas giant Shell International (along with Statoil (Norway) & Marathon Oil (US)) are poised to transform a remote conservation area of outstanding natural beauty into an environmental disaster zone with serious public health and safety implications. A dangerous on-shore pipeline and massive refinery will be constructed, poisoning the area and further contributing to climate chaos.
On June 29th 5 Rossport Residents (three farmers and two retired school teachers) were jailed indefinitely without trial for blocking Shell from building a natural gas pipeline across their land. The five argue that the pipeline is unsafe. Following their initial protests, Shell obtained a court injunction against the five, which the five ignored. This has resulted in the five being jailed for contempt of court and being imprisoned until they "purge their contempt". A solidarity camp set up in June has been carrying out blockades and pickets of Shell and other sites, putting an immense strain on the tiny farming communities affected.
Keep a lookout or plan for solidarity actions during September and on October 1st. In the meantime, please send urgent letters of support to:
