Here’s some reasons to be cheerful in the dark winter months... far from hiding away from the cold (or hiding heads in the sand for that matter), hotbeds of climate action are springing up around the country. On the Rising Tide front, six new groups have formed in the last six months, with more people writing in all the time. So if you don’t see your local area listed below or to the left and you want to get involved in bringing about the radical change we all know is needed, get in touch and let's make it happen!
Rising Tide Hastings started up in late summer, and it has so far been focusing on local outreach and media work, as well as supporting the Climate Camp at Heathrow, and leafleting at the Climate March in London in December. The group meets on the first Monday of the month and all are welcome.
Rising Tide has hit the South Coast in a big way... groups in Plymouth and Cornwall are both now up and running, and following successful outings for the day of action against the Royal Bank of Scotland, the two groups banded together to pull off an occupation of Newquay Airport, sparking a public debate about the future of the airport. Rising Tide Worthing is putting together an action for Fossil Fools Day, but more people are needed to get the group off the ground, so get in touch!
A Mid-Wales contingent has also joined the Rising Tide flock, and most recently got together with local residents and other climate activists to stop excavation work for a full day on Britain’s biggest ever open-cast coal mine at Ffos-y-fran in South Wales.
Finally, Rising Tide Leamington Spa launched this month and is now regularly meeting with ten people, a baby and a toddler. The group has hit the ground running, with film nights, public meetings, colourful and interactive stalls outside travel agencies, a samba-fuelled demo on the site of a proposed new supermarket and a flurry of action around Fossil Fools Day all in the works.
Happy New Year from Rising Tide... and here’s to a year of revolution for climate justice.
