What is it?
90% for 90% is a call for a 90% cut in UK public transport fares, to make public transport affordable, to start making changes that bring the 90% cut in greenhouse gases needed to halt climate change. Carrying a '90% for 90%' card, those who support the call will ask public transport workers and other passengers to join in. Some 90% for 90%ers refuse to pay more than 10%; some show the card in support of the call; some leaflet other passengers.

Four ways you can support the campaign:
1) Download and copy the 90% leaflet and distribute it widely to everyone you know.Leaflet all the passengers on the next train you take.
2) Download / send of for copies of the 90% for 90% card. Use it yourself to demand a fair fare.
3) Even if you have a full price ticket or a season ticket, keep the 90% card in your wallet and show it to the ticket collector - explain why you support the campaign. share your experiences with us so we can paste them on this site.
4) Meet up with public transport workers in your area - most unions will have regular branch meetings which you could attend. Invite them to join the call for 90% cuts for 90% cuts."Body text

Why we need 90% cuts

Some experts are calling for 60-80% cuts in greenhouse gas emissions, but these would only stabilise greenhouse gases in the atmosphere at today's levels. Given the time lag between emitting greenhouse gases and seeing the consequences (the weather we get today was cooked up over 100 years ago), we actually need to cut emissions by 90% in order to get the atmosphere back to pre-industrial levels.

We went camping near Windermere from Manchester and took a print out of the card and information from the website with us on the train. On the first train out of Manchester, we found seats on a quiet train and waited for the guard to come round. He was a friendly man, seemed interested in what we had to say, and said he'd go and ask someone else what he should do and would get back to us... He also wished us good luck getting to Windermere. He passed by us several other times in the journey checking peoples tickets and said nothing further to us! Our tickets were not checked on the next two trains. On the way back from Windermere, we again waited for the guard to come by and explained the situation to him, showing him the leaflet. He told us that he did not have the authority to let us pay only 10% of the fare, and since we would not pay the full fare he asked if we could leave the train... however, he told us to leave the train at Oxenholme (which was ideal to get back to Manchester) and not at Kendal (which was, in fact, the next stop). Two couples sat near us heard our discussion with the guard and asked to see the leaflet. Unfortunately we were not overly prepared and only had one tatty and badly printed copy so could not let them keep it. They were very interested in what we were doing and noted the website address. Once again, our tickets were not checked on the next two trains. Next time I'd definitely go more prepared, with copies of the leaflet and 90% for 90% card to hand out to others on the train.
