Rising Tide join Hinkley Point anti-Nuclear blockaders

Anti-nuclear protesters declared the mass blockade at Hinkley Point on 3rd October as a victory over EDF Energy. The nine-hour blockade in Somerset attracted supporters from all over the UK including Rising Tiders from London, Bristol & Plymouth. Several people came from as far afield as France, Ireland, Germany and Belgium as numbers topped 250.

Convoys of protesters began to arrive at the main gate shortly before 7am. The entrance is just yards away from where EDF Energy is making a bid to build two new mega-reactors.The blockade was launched with the arrival of a theatrical troupe Nuclear Investigation Team who enacted a nuclear disaster scenario similar to Fukushima. Stop New Nuclear spokesperson, Andreas Speck, said the blockade has put the government and EDF on the back foot. ‘Following the interest this blockade has attracted, both regionally and nationally, the government and EDF can no longer claim that the we need nuclear energy to keep the lights on.’ He continued: ‘Germany has committed to a nuclear-free future without buying nuclear power from France or building new coal-fired power stations. The German government is looking at a decentralised energy model with a mix of renewables and Combined Heat and Power (CHP) to bridge the gap left by withdrawal from nuclear.

Help Stop New Nuclear

Stop the next generation of nuclear power stations with a blockade at Hinkley Point - 3 October 2011

Hinkley Point is the first of eight proposed sites for nuclear new build to go ahead. We stopped them here before, and we can do it again. If they fail at Hinkley, it is unlikely the “nuclear renaissance” will have the momentum to continue.

The catastrophe is still unfolding at Fukushima, but the British government is continuing with its plans for building new nuclear power stations – nuclear new-build. While other countries at least put a moratorium on new nuclear, or even make plans to phase out nuclear energy completely, in Britain it’s as if Fukushima didn’t happen. Like a mantra, government and the nuclear industry keep repeating that Fukushima could not happen in Britain because there are no earthquakes of that magnitude. We heard similar excuses after Chernobyl (1986) and Three Mile Island (1979).

Rising Tide North America is pleased to announce the release of our latest publication: The Climate Movement is Dead: Long Live the Climate Movement.

In the aftermath of the COP15 talks in Copenhagen, the inability of the Big Greens, governments, and market approaches to find genuine and sustainable solutions to climate change is undeniable. As author Naomi Klein so aptly observed at the end of COP15 talks, “A particular model of dealing with climate change is dying.”

Mayday Climate Action Reports

Mayday Mayday! Activists target climate snatchers around the country.

Coventry
Leamington Rising Tide and People and Planet visited the E.on headquarters at Westwood Business Park in Coventry to expose the truth behind E.on's greenwash and show that carbon capture is a false solution to the problem of climate change. People arrived at 8am to hand fliers to the workers. One protester occupied the roof of the building. Banners were erected reading "POLLUTE.ON NO MORE GREEN WASH". There was juggling and a picnic outside the doors of the building as the protestors waited for a march of students from Warwick University People and Planet to arrive at 1.30. The marchers came with a replica model of the coal power station and a game of 'catch the carbon' with balloons and nets. The protesters gathered outside the building and then the sign outside was painted green to symbolise the e.ons greenwash.
