24 May 2004
A note for newcomers -
These news sheets are short (2 ish pages) and we won't "flood" you

1.
ACTION - The Day BEFORE Tomorrow
It's probably not escaped your notice
that there's a huge hollywood film about Climate Change being released
next week... around the country groups will be using this chance
to bring Climate Change issues into the public consciousness. Here's
a taste of what's going on and what you can get involved in:
Leafleting Cinemas:
Campaigners from Oxford and Edinburgh will be leafletting outside
cinemas to draw people's attention to the real science-fact threat
behind the science fiction film. If you would like copies of leaflets
to give people outside the cinema before or after the film you can
download the original to print from the Rising Tide website. If
you would like it customised to your area we can do that - contact
us now: 01865 241097, leaflet to download and distribute: www.risingtide.org.uk/pages/news/film.htm
Film Premiere Action, Wednesday
26th May: "Gather 5.30pm, Leicester Square. The film
starts at 7.30pm, but we need to be there early to get prepared,
be ready to cope with all eventualities. Gather in the centre of
the square, or later on just find us. We aim to have people in Uncle
Sam/Grim Reaper, Bush/Grim Reaper etc costumes with placards/banners
that say The Day after Tomorow, who will you bame?" Organised
by Campaign against Climate
Change
Spoof Website: Greenpeace
have put together a great spoof website, The Day Is Today... www.thedayaftertomorrow.org
2.
ACTION - Write a Book?!
South End Press, a nonprofit
publisher of political nonfiction, are seeking submissions of book
proposals and anthology chapters related to climate change politics:
"Priority will be given to proposals
that contribute to broadening the constituency and political agency
of groups committed to a fundamental reorganization of energy production
and consumption (goals on the order of a 70% reduction in world
carbon emissions within 25 years). We encourage writers to contextualize
their analysis of power structures — such as the fossil fuel
industry, auto industry, national and other administrations, mainstream
media, the academy, advocacy groups, etc. — with popular concerns
regarding the economy, public health, and social inequities. Writers
should present their arguments in a popular style with attention
to both local and global perspectives."
3.

4.
NEWS - Kyoto March Success
Hundreds of people attended the annual
Kyoto march, 15 May, to mark the anniversary of the US withdrawal
from the Kyoto Protocol. The march, organised by Campaign Against
Climate Change ended at the US embassy with barnstorming speeches
by Michael Meacher and Stephen Tindale.
Kaye and the Oil Matters team are safe
and back from the Sahara. They completed their mission to drive
from Plymouth to Dakar - 3,500 miles - in a car costing no more
than £100, powered by VEGETABLE OIL, raising awareness of
climate change and alternative fuels along the way. Well done them
:-)
6.
NEWS - Oxford Climate Change and Species Loss Vigil
About 40 people gathered on the steps
of the Clarendon Building, Broad Street, Oxford on Wednesday 12
May to draw attention to Professor Chris Thomas' report in the Januray
edition of Nature on the affect of climate change on terrestial
ecology. The report predicts that habitat losses due to climate
change will theaten an unprecedented number of species with extinction.
People sat and listened to short speeches, leafleted passers by,
posed for a student magazine photographer and discussed what they
could do about climate change. A number of people decided to get
together a leaflet to give out at the Oxford screenings of "The
Day After Tommorrow", the Hollywood climate change disaster
film. Many were keen to carry on local campaigning; we eagerly await
further reports.
If you know of any local initiatives please let us know
and we will put it in this newsletter.
The Permaculture Woodland Gathering
is the first national get-together with the specific subject of
sustainable woodland management, and is a must for anybody with
a passion for our woodlands.

22nd to the 28th of August,
Asturias, Spain
ESCANDA and the International Network
For Sustainable Energy are holding an International Seminar on Renewable
Energies and Social Change:
"We want to bring together people
working on positive alternatives to the oil and nuclear industries
with people who are active in denouncing them and campaigning against
destructive companies and projects, to fostering more cross-pollination
between the "practical" and the "political",
in order to strengthen the efforts done from all sides for positive
social change. We will develop practical tools to increase the communication
and coordination between these areas of work."
