POSTCARD FROM BRIGHTON-DISPLAY AVAILABLE FOR LOAN
For the Week of Action we took to the streets - or rather
to the petrol station forecourts and leafleted people at
Esso stations as part of the Stop Esso Campaign. The profile of the
demo was enhanced by the arrival of two police cars (more interested
in the issues than on moving us on) and by the hoots of approval
from passing motorists. The action linked in with a stall on a pedestrianised
street, organized by Friends of the Earth, which presented the broader
climate change picture.
We have built a display, describing the consequences of greenhouse
gas emissions in the future, and incorporating a working model of
a wind turbine, which has been touring round various shop windows
and libraries. If anyone wants to use it they are more than welcome.
The central unit is a box, 3 foot high by 1 and a half foot
wide with a display panel on the front sloping back. This panel
is split in two - positive outcomes from positive action on the
left, negative outcomes from failing to act on the right, all set
against a 2000 to 2080 graduated time scale. The protruding base
of the box unit supports a wind turbine and a solar panel. The wind
turbine spins when a doorbell (located on the front of the shop
window when the display is in a shop) is pressed. There is also
a flat scale model, 2 foot by 1 and a half, of the south coast of
England, showing coastal erosion and the effects of failed crops.

REPORT FROM EARTH FIRST! GATHERING FIRST WEEK OF AUGUST
There were two climate campaign workshops at the EF! gathering-
both well attended with good energy and enthusiasm for working on
climate. One of the ideas which had strong support was the possibility
of a national UK climate action in Spring 2002. This will be discussed
in more detail at the October Rising Tide gathering. There was also
strong interest in campaigning on oil and gas as issues that combine
climate change with globalisation, and
working with communities effected by the flooding last winter.

book has been distributed far and wide. It has been translated into

TREESPONSIBILITY GATHERING - HEBDEN BRIDGE 5TH TO 7TH OCTOBER
The gathering is concerning tree planting but is also a space to
debate climate issues and ideas for local activity and action. Contact
01422 843222, 10 Broughton Street, Hebden Bridge, HX7 8JY. 8 pounds
per day, 5 pounds low/unwaged. Pick up provided from Hebden train
station. Childcare available if requested . No dogs. Treesponsibility
is also pushing for a boycott Esso tree week. "Lets plant trees
in our communities, while getting the word out about who really
cares for the planet and who is paying lip service while raking
in profits made from destroying our planet" (Maybe to advance the
"it's not just Esso" angle, we could plant trees in BP and Shell
forecourts???)

SKILLS NEEDS-SUPPORT FOR TALKS TO SCHOOLS
Wanting to get involved and really make a difference, but not sure
what to do? This is a regular item on great things to do that need
someone to grab the bull by the horns.
Everyone talks of the value of getting climate chaos discussed
in schools- but there is still a shortage of teaching materials-
and people doing it! Is anyone interested in starting something
moving and preparing a schools programme- infosheets on the problem,
our individual role in the problem, practical solutions. If anyone
wants to start work on this (or has already done it) let us know
and we will support you as best we can.
