THIS ISSUE:

WEEK OF CLIMATE ACTIONS-

90% for 90% DAY OF ACTION 16TH JULY

GOING TO BONN 19th-27th July 2001

NATIONAL TOUR

SPEAKER TRAINING

This is the first newsheet update on the UK climate action campaign. The newsheets will be short (2 pages) and we won't "flood" you (ho ho)- we will issue them only when we have something to say and even then no more than one update per week (and maybe even less often).

YOUR DETAILS WILL NEVER BE GIVEN TO ANYONE.

We hope you don’t mind us putting you on this list. We’re really sorry if you don’t want it. If you want to be taken off the list simply write to risingtide-unsubscribe@topica.com.

Send anything for inclusion in the update to George at weathersave@netscapeonline.co.uk. The newsheet is a tight short format so if your info is too long we might put it up on the web page and just refer to it in the newsheet.

CALL FOR A WEEK OF LOCAL UK CLIMATE ACTION DURING COP6.5 (BONN), JULY 16th-23rd JULY

Put this in your diary! AND START PLANNING - IT'S LESS THAN FOUR WEEKS AWAY!

We are planning a week of local actions in the UK during the first week of the COP6.5 climate meeting in Bonn, from July 14-21st this year. COP6 in The Hague in November 2000 saw inspiring actions take place both in The Hague and all over the UK (not to mention the rest of the world). These Rising Tide actions condemned the way the unsigned Kyoto protocol is becoming a trade deal dominated by businessmen desperate for a piece of the new market in trading carbon emissions. The actions also called for 60-90% reductions in such emissions, and fast.

It’s time to make our voices heard, only louder this time. COP6.5 will also see a mobilisation in Bonn to which many UK people may travel, but there is also a growing feeling among Rising Tide UK people that many of us would rather make an impact where we live.

Various events and actions are coming together all over the place, and we hope you're able to participate during the week, as well as letting us know what your plans are so that we can collate them on the Rising Tide (UK) website well before the week begins. Good luck to all of us!

Ideas for actions and campaigns that people suggested on the Rising Tide tour have been collated and will be loaded up on the RT website by the end of this week.

Materials- we have a range of materials available including infosheets, cartoon booklets, and basic display packs.

90% for 90% DAY OF ACTION 16TH JULY

Kicking off the week of actions will be a national day of action calling for a 90% cut in public transport fares, to make public transport affordable as a fundamental contribution to the 90% cut in UK greenhouse gases emissions needed to halt climate change.

There are materials, information, copies of the 90% card, and leaflet, ideas of actions, legal briefings all on the website. Some people have leafleted trains, talked to staff, some organised in groups and simply refused to pay more than 10% of their fare. Their experiences are also up on the web. Go on a 90% trip on the 16th: to the seaside (get there before it gets to you); to the countryside; to view your nearest oil refinery — the possibilities are endless.

Alternatively, for £3.50 you can receive a pack of 50 cards and one leaflet ‘top copy’ for

photocopying. Send a cheque / postal order payable to ‘Rising Tide’ to: 90% for 90%, c/o Manchester Earth First! Box 29, 22a Beswick Street, Manchester, M4 7HS.

GOING TO BONN 19th-27th July 2001

The Risingtide group in Bonn has been planning since the beginning of the year and have planned protests for 16th, 17th, 19th, and 27th (plus there's a Friends of the Earth mass action on the 21st). Groups will be coming from around Europe. As yet there is no plan to have a "Risingtide UK" presence in Bonn, so if you want to go, best to contact the Bonn office directly (web details http://www.risingtide.de). It might be possible to travel with Friends of the Earth UK. Contact FoE on 0207 490 1555

NATIONAL TOUR

The Rising Tide Climate Chaos Tour started in Brighton and passed through Farnborough, London (x2), Edinburgh, Lancaster, Liverpool, Newcastle, York, Reading and finally ended in Oxford with a benefit (and large party) by Seize The Day. Each event was very different in size and feeling: some small and intimate, some large and buzzing.

'Really professional, well thought through and geared to action! For a simple collection of like minded individuals as they call themselves, they had the place buzzing."

Response from activist at the Edinburgh meeting

The audience response was strong throughout and a range of comments (some critical) are up on the website http://www.risingtide.org.uk Please send us any more opinions. You can also download all the materials from the tour.

SPEAKER TRAINING

On the 9th June, 22 people came together in Oxford for an all day training on how to speak to audiences on climate change. The all day course covered the basics of the science, the qualities of public speaking, and how to include emotions (which, after all, is what engages people). The feedback from the group was very positive and encourages us to prepare further workshops. If you are interested in attending a future course or, better still, hosting a course in your own area contact Jo Hamilton on joham1@chickmail.com.

The materials from the training, including nine factsheets, will be posted up on the website next week.
