G8 Climate Counter Summit - Moving Beyond the Greenwash, Monday March 14, London

An open invitation to climate change activists, people from environmental NGOs, social justice & community groups and anyone interested in finding out more about climate action in the run-up to the G8 Summit.

As the International Energy and Environment Ministers' Roundtable meets in London (March 15th-16th), the establishment's climate change agenda is dominated by hot air - and completely undermined by an absence of action. Currently Tony Blair's government, and by extension the G8, are capturing both the media attention and the moral high ground on this issue, further marginalising those calling for just and real solutions to climate change.

Equador's Largest National Park opened for development

Controversy is raging over oil development activities slated for Ecuador's largest national park - Yasuni National Park, which protects one of the world's most megadiverse regions. Jaguars, harpy eagles, caimans and 13 primate species live in this lowland rainforest, the ecological treasure of the western Amazon basin.

Last month, Ecuador's Environment Ministry granted the Brazilian national oil company Petrobras a long-awaited license to begin pumping oil out of the park in northern Ecuador.

Coming straight from the High Court for the Fairford trial, the sambistas gathered in the cafe of the Royal Festival Hall to have a chat over coffee. We were already joined by some of the police, but spirits were high and we were ready to visit some of the climate criminals haunts.

This summer, the counter-capitalist expo of specially commissioned paintings, drawings, photographs and texts took place to popular acclaim, and even managed the odd article in the mainstream press...

Indymedia Under Attack - FBI Seizes UK Indymedia Servers

FBI seizes IMC servers in UK

In a chilling case of censorship, the FBI, acting on a request from Italian and Swiss authorities, ordered two servers confiscated from Rackspace in London last Thursday morning effectively removing 20 Indymedia sites and some others from the internet.

Indymedia is regularly used by UK climate change activists to post events, reports and photos from actions that are ignored by the mainstream media.

Urgent Action Needed: Tortured Baku-Ceyhan Pipeline campaigner considers indefinite hunger strike

Ferhat Kaya, the prominent human rights defender detained and allegedly tortured in Turkey following his work to mitigate the impacts of the controversial Baku-Ceyhan (BTC) pipeline has indicated that he will commence a 'death fast' hunger strike on 12 May 2004 if his application for release is not accepted. Human rights and environmental groups are calling on the international community to intervene urgently to guarantee the safety of the campaigner.

Activists invades ERM offices over BP Baku pipeline
Activists from London Rising Tide and others protested at the offices of the Enviromental Resource Management over their complicity in plans by BP to build 2 massive oil pipelines from Azerbaijan to Turkey. The enviromental damage could be catastrophic for the region.

Several activists got inside the MD's office and occupied it while other outside hung banners from trees and demonstrated outside the entrance.

Rising Tide UK Gathering report
4-6th October 2002, Manchester
Mark Thomas kickstarted the gathering on the friday night linking climate change, oil, pipelines, corruption, water privatisation and very dodgy politics together in his own unique, punchy style.

The weekend was a chance to look at the spectrum of climate issues, movement building and action planning. Workshops on carbon trading, why the Kyoto protocol fails, the Baku pipeline, local community campaigning, worldwide impacts of climate change, climate justice, inspiration for taking local action, climate change despair and empowerment, networking, videos, music and more.
